The Basic Skills Phonic Reading / Spelling book has been compiled to provide a course aimed at improving reading and spelling and using the phonic approach. About 80% of English words can be spelt phonetically. Of course many words are irregular - the most important ones used by children in primary schools are dealt with towards the end of the book. By attacking words phonetically a child will build up reading and spelling confidence. You will find that in no time he or she will be able to tackle long words by breaking them into syllables.
 
Some instructions for using this book:
Instructions are underlined and should be read by the parent.
Make sure that all sounds are mastered before continuing to the next set.
Encourage the child to look up words in the dictionary that he or she does not understand. If this proves to be difficult then explain the meaning yourself.
Revision - it is advisable to go back from time to time. Ask the child to re-read words in previous sets.
