Discovering Art & Music in the Younger Years: Volume 1 introduces students to the rich inheritance of Western art and music through clear, engaging lessons designed especially for the grammar stage. Taught by Dr. Carol Reynolds, this course invites young students to encounter the Beautiful—not as something distant or abstract, but as something they can see, hear, and begin to understand.
 
The course is organized into 17 thoughtfully structured units that pair concepts in art with corresponding principles in music. Students explore foundational ideas such as horizon and melody, vanishing point and harmony, rhythm and focal point, and color and tone, alongside imaginative themes like animals, the Nativity, the seasons, portraits, and landscapes.
Each lesson gently trains students to observe, listen, and speak about what they experience. Rather than overwhelming the child with technical detail, the course emphasizes recognition, wonder, and understanding. Students learn to notice how artists guide the eye, how composers shape sound, and how both arts reflect order, beauty, and meaning.
