Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary K-3 Volume 1 is an art instruction book for early elementary students is the starting point for a delightful adventure in art history. Lessons introduce children to the vocabulary of art in innovative ways that produce clear understanding and encourage learners to apply the concepts to their own ideas and interests. Children learn what artists do and what they see as they explore still lifes, portraits, figures, animals, and landscapes. Included are twelve text lessons featuring artworks by the masters and six video lessons featuring art material instruction. Lessons include projects where children work with watercolor crayons, oil pastels, colored paper, and more.

 

Volume 1 lays the foundation for the K-3 program. Although examples of art masterpieces are included in this course, the emphasis is on learning to understand art and what artists do. Lessons in this volume introduce composition, mixing colors, understanding form and shape, drawing shapes, composing and drawing a still life, observation, drawing figures (people and animals), and portraits. Art media introduced includes watercolor crayons and oil pastels. Many of these lessons are similar to the first 21 lessons in the 3rdedition ofARTistic Pursuits K-3 Book One.
