A bulb one end contains most of the alcohol, and the quantity is contracted or expanded within the capillary tube. Unlike with older mercury-in-glass thermometers, the contents of this alcohol version are less toxic and will evaporate away fairly quickly, making this instrument significantly safer for use around children.
