Air Track – Complete Kit, with Blower, Timer, Accessory Pack. Air track, a device with low friction, is used for kinematicsexperiments. Compressed air is injected into the cavity beneath the track. Since thiscavity is sealed, the air can only escape through the small holes on the track itself.
This provides a force strong enough to lift the sliders, which drastically lowersfriction.
Since it provides low friction, the Airtrack can be used for a variety ofmechanics experiments. The principles of frictionless motion have been wellunderstood for over 200 years, but it was not until the 1960’s that the air track cameinto general usage. It allows an experimenter to quickly and easily simulate zerofriction, which is very useful for collisions, acceleration due to gravity, energytransformation, projectile motion, and numerous other physical laws. Note: althoughthe air track provides a very low coefficient of friction, some friction remains, as wellas drag with the air itself. Because of this, experiments utilizing the air track willapproach but not equal theoretical results.
