Charlotte Mason

Charlotte Mason was a British educator‑reformer, and one of her main principles is that children have minds and are capable of understanding exquisitely written literature. Living Books replace dry facts in textbooks or simplified, “dumbed‑down” materials, allowing children to engage deeply with a subject and heighten their interest in the topic. As children read, they learn about the subject almost unconsciously, retaining more information because they can tether it to an engaging story.

A Living Book makes the subject come alive because the author has a genuine passion for the topic. When the narrative is well written, it connects with the reader and sparks emotion and imagination. A Living Book also contains rich ideas that feed the reader’s mind and inspire new thoughts. When all these elements come together in a book, then it is truly a Living Book.
