These rods are an ideal resource to demonstrate thermalconductivity experiments. Each set consistsof 6 different metal rods. Each rod is 300mm long x 3mm diameter. The metals provided to demonstrate thermal conductivity are iron, copper, aluminium, lead, brass and zinc.

Metals typically have a relatively high concentration of free conduction electrons, and these can transfer heat as they move through the lattice. Phonon-based conduction also occurs, but the effect is swamped by that of electronic conduction. Thermal conductivity is described as the rate at which heat passes through a specified material. These rods will show that this rate is different for the different types of metal included in the set.
