Heavy greyish-black plates or granules having a metallic luster; characteristic odour. Readily sublimed having a violet vapour. Soluble in alcohol, chloroform, glycerol and alkaline iodide solutions. Incompatible with ammonia, tetra amine copper, sulfate/ethanol, fluorine, halogen fluorides, some metal acetylides, some metal powders.
 
Can be used in slides to stain carbohydrates in plant and animal specimens brown or blue-black. Stains glycogen red.
