Spelling
Memoria Press Traditional Spelling is a comprehensive, phonetically-based program designed to transition students from basic decoding to advanced spelling mastery. It serves as the bridge between their early reading series, like First Start Reading, and more complex literature studies.
Core Philosophy & Structure
The program follows a "classical" methodology, which emphasizes teacher-student interaction and deep analysis of word patterns rather than simple rote memorization. Phonetic Mastery: Unlike programs that rely on random word lists, this series groups words by phonetic concepts (e.g., specific vowel teams or consonant blends). The "Colorful Letters" Technique: A signature feature where students use colored pencils to mark up their words—writing vowels/vowel teams in red and consonants/blends in blue. This visual coding helps children see the "chunks" within a word. Daily Rhythm: Lessons are typically structured over a five-day week: Day 1: Word introduction and "Say-Spell-Say" oral practice. Day 2: Word analysis, syllable division, and color-coding. Day 3: Words in context through short, informative stories (covering topics like history or science). Day 4: Dictation of phonograms and full sentences. Day 5: Final spelling test.
