Micky is the blessed one, the darling of the Donoghues and their hopes for the future. This larger than life expatriate Irish Family - viewed through the eyes of its youngest member - is passionate, eccentric, prone to extremes of love and violence. It is also falling apart. Rejected both Church and State, they totally refuse to compromise with the times. Nan and Gramps, more than anyone else, mirror their strengths and weaknesses, ruling the family as much with their fists as with force of personality. Yet Micky grows up through the 1940s and 50s, he comes to realise that his grandparents fiercely loving ways are more a blessing than a threat.
